EARTHQUAKES!

ABOUT

EARTHQUAKES! is a construction game developed for the mobile platform. Designed to be intuitive and educational, the game is based on simulating building behaviour during earthquakes. The game is played from an omniscient perspective, where the player draws building components directly onto the mobile though screen. However, the player needs to be quick as well as thoughtful, as their work will be tested against the arrival of  earthquakes. Striking, simple visuals take inspiration from sectional diagrams in technical blueprints, aiming to be both attractive and informative.

[1] UI Design

This project is a pitch-design-prototype with a short development period. The user interface for the project is described on the left.  The player draws game objects onto the smart phone. The drawing toolkit is accessible through kinetic taps. After tapping the button, the drawing tool switches to that displayed on the button. The timer indicates how much time is left until the earthquake arrives to test the buildings’ structural stability. A haptic — a phone vibration — marks the occurance of an earthquake. The 2D physics engine from the game will now simulate the behaviour of buildings during earthquakes. The game is a 2D type game, and the levels are designed as a scrolling screen.

[2] Game Flow

The player plays as an omnipresent avatar: the player has god-like powers to build quickly and single-handedly. Once the player enters the level, the player is notified how much time is left until the coming natural disaster. The timer starts ticking. Tapping away at the drawing toolkit, the player starts building building foundations, steel frame structures, and joining all the different building parts with joints. The player may scroll to the side to explore more of the landscape, and continue building. This continues until the prophesized catastrophe: THE EARTHQUAKE!
